Man-kind?

Another black day in Mumbai and Kashmir yesterday. This is just another addition to the never ending list of black days that we've been seeing in different parts of the world. It never affects us..never - unless it takes away one of our own. I kept seeing those messages on the news channel yesterday..people anxious to tell their folks that they were ok. I wondered about those people who were unable to send any kind of message..ever again..

I dont want to ask why these 'terrorists' or 'freedom fighters', or whoever /whatever they are, do what they do. I dont want to ask them what they gain by proving that they can kill innocents. I dont want to condemn them as cowardly. I dont want them to lay their arms down and be like Gandhi, or to be more contemporary, to be like the exemplary Tibetans. And I dont want to appeal to them for mercy. They would never see this blog, and they would never listen.

There is a Sci fi short story..by the name " Houston, Houston, Do You Read?" by James Tiptree Jr. Three astronauts find themselves through a time warp and into the not so distant future. They are rescued by another spaceship 'manned' by women alone. They soon come to learn that there are no more men on Earth, and that women run the show..they clone and produce more women. There is no place for man, our three astronauts learn..

" They were good men," Lorimer repeats elegaically. He knows he is speaking for it all, for Dave's father, for Bud's manhood, for himself, for Cro-Magnon, for the dinosaurs too, maybe." I'm a man. By god yes, I'm angry. I have a right. We gave you all this, we made it all. We built you precious civilization and your knowledge and comfort and medicines and your dreams. All of it. We protected you, we worked our balls off keeping you and your kids. It was hard. It was a fight, a bloody fight all the way. We're tough. We had to be, cant you understand? Can't you for Christ's sake understand that? "
...

The lady says " Of course we enjoy your inventions and we do appreciate your evolutionary role. But you must see there's a problem. As i understand it, what you protected people from was largely other males, wasn't it?..But the fighting is long over. It ended when you did."

On days like yesterday, I wish that something like this really happened..that man would simply wither away..atleast the killing would end..

I am really pissed.

Shain, i share the same feeling - PISSED OFF.....!! yea man, sometimes when stuff like this happens, helpless is all we can feel. We also have a hundred questions in our head for which we just can never find answers, how hard we may search. Anyway, salute to the people of mumbai for the spirit they have shown. It is indeed the greatest city in the world (did someone mention rude??)
And by the way, the western media in this country(usa) shows a different picture. They show it as if the city is in utter chaos and has been shut down and paralysed.

@ The Reprobate : ......christmas-inu padakkam pottikaamaayirunnu!!!!!!!!!! *hands outstretched as usual*

@Zoxcleb - You can catch the whole story in Issac Asimov's 'Science Fiction Treasury' ..It's a 2 book anthology in one..gotta thank our Library for that one :)

@Helga : the question of 'nobility' unfortunately is a very debatable one...if you dont fight, then others take you for granted..i guess all of civilization has been built on some sort of exploitation and violence..and when you do fight, this is what also happens..

on a lighter note, you shd read that story..u wd love it :-D

U know, Shain....everyone seems to be talking about the spirit of Bombay.....I personally think that this spirit stuff is simply the ppl displaying a classic case of denial. I can see it in the faces of the ppl arnd me. In my case too, the reality never hit me before I came to know that a close friend of mine was in the compartment next to the one in which the blast occured. She only had a few scratches, but the mental scarring she has suffered is all too visible!!!

And abt the US channels trying to portray Bombay as a city full of chaos, there was some semblance of chaos here for upto 3-4 hrs after the blasts, which is pretty natural. That very night, the trains were back on track!!

Its high time they all stopped criticising this place....New York is not all that great, u kno!!!!
